When
Larry Foster first began to write WORMWOOD, his main character was
a blond woman from the mid-west, an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ type who
goes to Hollywood in search of her sister.
After he wrote about 50 pages, he felt unhappy with the lead
character. She was very boring
and unbelievable. In the back
of his mind, from the beginning, he had liked the idea of having his
wife, Lourdes, as the main character, but he had never told her.
Lourdes
Foster is not blond. She is an exotic black beauty from Panama. When she and Larry met,
in 1986, she was a Fulbright Scholar who was taking English courses
at the University of Arizona. Her Bachelor of Science degree in Panama was
in Civil Engineering. She
came to the United States to get a Master of Science in Structural
Engineering. She and Larry married in 1988.
Today
Lourdes Foster is a successful Structural Engineer who works for a
large Engineering Company in Tucson, Arizona.
Lourdes
doesn’t give a rat’s ass about Hollywood. She has never acted before and was quite startled
when Larry TOLD her she would star in WORMWOOD. She thought he was joking. She didn’t like
the idea, but realized they could get no other actress to devote a
year or more to the film.
Larry
re-wrote the script with Lourdes in mind as CRISTINA, the main character.
Cristina would be a foreign Structural Engineer who didn’t
give a rat’s ass about Hollywood. Her character would be very tough and wouldn’t
take crap from anyone. She
would be a person of very few words.
In other words, Lourdes could play herself.
For the first several weeks of shooting, Lourdes was somewhat uncomfortable, but as she became accustomed to the weekly crowds of people, she relaxed and began to enjoy the whole experience. By the end of shooting, Lourdes loved the filmmaking process, but not the acting. She can’t wait to make another movie, as long as she doesn't have to be in front of the camera.
